CMPS272, Winter 2007, Section 01: SharksandMinnows

This CA has several unique animations that make for an entertaining viewing. Sharks are represented by red squares and fish [minnows] by green. Sharks eat any adjacent fish but will die if they do not feed within in a set number of iterations. Sharks and fish have regular bouts of reproduction. A small display in the lower right corner of the animation shows a graph of population size through time. If you wait long enough you will see time lags between shark and minnow growth curves. The programmer also found it useful to provide the animation in the shape of a "torus." This was done to depict accurately the condition when a shark or fish goes of the edge of the 2D surface- they come out on the other side.
