CMPS272, Winter 2007, Section 01: BriansBrainCA

Brian's Brain is very similar to the GameOfLife cellular automaton, but with one significant difference.

A cell that "dies" in Conway's Life can be immediately "born" again, leading to some simple Blinkers that alternate between two states. In the Brian's Brain automaton, a cell that "dies" enters a brief refractory period before it is eligible to be "born" again.

The result of this change is that simple events trigger directional effects, which often results in the creation of "gliders", patterns of "on" cells that move across the world. Nearly any random scribbling leads to gliders.
