Principles of Database Systems

Course Description: This course will cover foundational concepts and topics at the heart of (big or small) data management, leading to advance research topics towards the end of the course. Specifically, this course will cover foundational topics central to relational database systems, such as relational algebra, relational calculus, SQL, conjunctive queries, the homomorphism theorem, recursive queries and Datalog, database dependencies, and the chase procedure. This course will also cover, as time permits, advanced topics on large-scale data integration or topics related to the Semantic Web. A pre-requisite of CMPS180 or equivalent is required. Please speak to the instructor if you have problems enrolling in this class.
